Chris began playing the cornet aged seven but gradually moved down the band until he found his true calling on the tuba. As a native of Lancashire, Chris was inspired from an early age by the Leyland Band after seeing them perform a concert under Richard Evans. He also joined the Young Lancashire Brass, the county youth band, spending several years as principal Eb Bass and winning several awards for Outstanding Musicianship. This also gave him the chance to perform in countries across Europe on the band’s numerous summer tours.
In January 2002, he accepted an offer to join the Leyland Band, becoming Principal Tuba later that year. In 2005, Chris won the ‘Bandsman of the Year’ award for his work ‘behind the scenes’ at Leyland. He counts winning the National Finals in 2005 and Best Soloist Award at the 2008 Grand Shield as two of his proudest banding achievements.
Chris graduated with a Masters in Chemistry from the University of Manchester in 2006. He now works as a production chemist for a large chemical company in Runcorn.
