Richard’s appearance is at the request of concert organisers and long time friends of both Richard and the band, Robert Hardon and Margaret Younghusband (mother of the well known bass trombone player and all round character, Peter). See here for tickets. Presenting a program of entertaining and uplifting music, allied to Richard’s legendary wit, Leyland are delighted to return to Workington almost 12 months since our last visit at the height of the 2015 floods.

Richard’s connections to Cumbria are very strong, having been the professional conductor of the county’s youth band for many years. Whilst there he helped developed some exceptional young players including Peter Younghusband and Ian Porthouse, many of whom have gone to have fabulous careers in a diverse range of music making.

The afternoon matinee concert will feature music from William Tell to the Phantom of the Opera. Soloists will include principal cornet Iain Culross performing Del Steiger’s variations on “Carnival of Venice”, and principal euphonium James McLeod performing Philip Sparke’s original solo for euphonium “Harlequin”.

All proceeds of the concert will go to Prostate Cancer UK charities, a very worthwhile cause Leyland are proud to support.
