Tribute To Trombone Legend

Leyland were devastated to hear that bass trombone legend Adrian Morris had lost his battle with cancer on Monday morning.

All at Leyland Band were shocked to hear of the recent passing of Bass Trombonist Adrian Morris, after a five year battle with a progressive illness. Adrian, known as ‘Benny’ to his friends, was a world-renowned Bass Trombonist and teacher, having played for the Hallé Orchestra in Manchester since 1999 until this summer, after spending 11 years at the Ulster Orchestra in Ireland. He was also professor of Bass Trombone and a Fellow of the Royal Northern College of Music.

During the 1980’s, Benny was a member of the Leyland Band, and gained some celebrity status in the brass band world, for his performance of ‘Wand’rin’ Star’ on the televised Granada Band of the Year competition. Known widely for his wonderful playing and musicianship, those who were lucky enough to have known Benny knew him for his infectious warm and friendly personality, and fantastic sense of humour. He was one of the great personalities of the brass world, and an incredible role model for his students.

Our own Bass Trombonist, Matt Denney, was lucky enough to have studied with Benny during his time at the RNCM, and became close friends. Matt described him as ‘a great friend, so genuine and caring, and one of the finest bass trombonists you’ll ever hear!’. Benny will be greatly missed by all, though leaves behind him an incredible legacy.

All at Leyland Band send heartfelt condolences to Benny’s wife, Carole.
