Leyland’s latest CD, Leyland In Concert, presents some of the most popular items from the band’s concerts in 2014
Soloists abound, not least in the shape of Chris Doran on Eb Bass who performs ‘Scherzo’, and Bill Carter on Bb Bass swims serenely through ‘Forty Fathoms’ – a unique double on one CD! James McLeod thrills in Philip Sparke’s euphonium showcase ‘Pantomime’. ‘Oh When The Saints’ is given the John Doyle treatment, and Owen Middlemass is mesmerising on xylophone in Bach’s famous ‘Toccata in D Minor’.
More reflective items include a fabulous arrangement of the classic ‘Amazing Grace’, and Kenneth Downie’s beautiful setting ‘In Perfect Peace’. Stand out arrangements include Iain McKnight’s masterful setting of the highlights from ‘Chicago’. Two giants from brass band history contribute arrangements – Walter Hargreaves transcription of the overture to ‘Ruslan & Ludmilla’ brilliantly captures the vitality of the original, and Weston-Nicholl’s setting of the finale to Dvorak’s 9th Symphony better known as the New World Symphony has thrilled audiences far and wide.
