‘Penlee’ became the first brass band recording to be included in the Classic FM top 300 recordings in 2011.
Leyland Band demonstrate their commitment to innovation in bringing together new works from 2 of the most original composers on the current brass scene, Kenneth Hesketh and the band’s Composer in Residence, Simon Dobson. Penlee is the ground breaking CD which has received critical acclaim.
This is the 3rd collaboration between the band and Faber Music (London), and showcases the work of 2 of the country’s most exciting composers.
Simon Dobson (Leyland’s Composer in Residence) is a colourful young composer. Born in Cornwall, Simon has always played an active part in that county’s strong banding scene and began composing for brass band in his teenage years. In 2000, Simon won a scholarship to study at the Royal College of Music in London, and he gone on to create a unique style of composition for band. Many of his new works have been premiered by Leyland Band, for example at the prestigious RNCM Festival of Brass.
Kenneth Hesketh is a very versatile composer, much in demand in the United Kingdom and abroad, and particularly known for his wind band writing, many exapmles of which have become contemporary classics of that genre. He too studied at the Royal College of Music in London, and later at Tanglewood. He was awarded a scholarship from the Toepfer Foundation, Hamburg at the behest of Sir Simon Rattle.
