2017 Matinee Concert Series

2017 Matinee Concert Series Romantic Beginnings

The Leyland Band 2017 Matinee Concert Series begins with a varied romantic program featuring the band and the renowned University of Central Lancashire Chamber Choir.

Romantic UCLan chamber choir

The 2016 Matinee Series was the most successful to date, and 2017 boasts another great line up of concerts and guests, beginning with the Chamber Choir, and concerts featuring The Red Admiral Music Academy and the Lancashire Youth Band confirmed for later in the year.

UCLan Chamber Choir

The award-winning UCLan Chamber Choir was formed in 2005 with sixteen members. This was increased to twenty-eight in 2009. All the singers are BA (Hons) Music Theatre undergraduate students whose main passion is singing. The choir has a wide and varied repertoire that includes music from the Renaissance to the present day, as well as a range of styles from Classical to Swing. In 2009 the choir won the Good Housekeeping Choir of the Year and in 2010 won the adult category final in this competition, at Birmingham Symphony Hall.

The choir has been on an annual tour to the South West of France, stretching back to 2007, and in 2010 represented the University by singing at its partner institution, the Shanghai Institute of Foreign Trade, in China.

Leyland Band are proud of our long standing association with the University and delighted the choir are able to join us in concert.

Pageantry in the Program

Leyland Band musical director Thomas Wyss has chosen a varied program with some clear and not so obvious, but nonetheless romantic connections.

The most challenging item is “Pageantry”, an original piece for band by Herbert Howells which depicts a romantic age of the knights of old. In three movements, “King’s Herald”, “Cortege” and “Jousts”, the piece invokes images of knights and maids, pathos and heroism, presented in its entirety to finish the first half. Leyland’s 1980’s BBC Radio 3 recording of “Pageantry” in a program also featuring the ground breaking work “Songs Of The Aristos” for band and magnetic tape – what could be more romantic than that! – was rewarded with the title of BBC Band of the Year.
