19 year old Joe Martin is Leyland’s latest recruit making the soprano cornet seat his own.
Royal Northern College of Music student Joe Martin has joined the Leyland cornet section on soprano cornet.
From Harrogate, Joe began studying at the RNCM in September 2014 where he enjoys the teachings of Rhys Owens, Principal Trumpet of the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra.
At the age of 8 Joe began playing cornet, taught by Richard Wilton and soon after joined the Knaresborough Silver Band and the Tewit Youth Band. He switched to soprano cornet at 11 and started a 7 year development under the expert tutoring of Jim Shepherd of ‘Jim Shepherd Versatile Brass’ fame. He is former long time member of the National Youth Brass Band of Great Britain and his time there has performed in some of the best known concert halls in the UK, including Bridgewater Hall, The Sage and in 2012 at the Royal Albert Hall in the famous BBC Proms.
Joe cemented his position at Leyland with superb playing in concerts on consecutive nights in Northampton and Norwich. All of Leyland wish him well and delighted to welcome him to the band.
